When it comes to where to stay on the island, the truth is there’s no right or wrong answer. It ultimately depends on the type of St. Lucia vacation you have in mind.  While St. Lucia is famous for the dramatic Pitons in the south, the north has more to offer most travelers. Let’s take a closer look at north St. Lucia vs. south St. Lucia to help you decide. 

The North: Rodney Bay, Gros Islet & Castries

While north St. Lucia is home to a number of resort areas, most travelers choose to stay in the Rodney Bay, Gros Islet, and Castries areas. This region has so much to offer anyone looking for the best places to stay in St. Lucia for first-time travelers. Here are some of the highlights the area has to offer:

Lots of St. Lucia Resorts to Choose From 

For most first-time travelers trying to decide where to stay in St. Lucia, the north is an obvious first choice. From budget-friendly options to high-end luxury and all-inclusive options, there’s a wide variety of  St. Lucia resorts located in the north to choose from. It’s also the best place to stay on the island if you want to find a St. Lucia beachfront resort.

Easy Access to Some of the Best St. Lucia Beaches 

The Rodney Bay area is home to the best beaches in St. Lucia. Reduit Beach is the best beach on the island. Featuring white sands and calm turquoise waters, it’s perfect for swimming and watersports. From paddleboarding and kayaking to snorkeling and jet skiing, there’s something for everyone here. It’s also the perfect place to stay in St. Lucia for families who want a beach vacation.

If you’re wondering where to stay in St. Lucia to get a taste of the island’s nightlife, then look no further. There are lots of bars and clubs in the Rodney Bay area. But one of my personal favorite St. Lucia attractions is the Gros Islet Friday Night Street Party (which is also known as the Friday Night “Jump-Up”). When the sun goes down, the streets come alive with music, dancing, street food, and fun! The north is perfect for people who want to experience the island’s culture and St. Lucia nightlife. 

Insider tip: The north is sunnier and tends to get less rain than the south. If you’re looking for a place to stay in St. Lucia that’s predictable for beach days, the Rodney Bay area is a great option.

The South: Soufrière

Although south St. Lucia includes several towns and villages, most tourists are drawn to Soufrière due to its close proximity to the Pitons, luxury resorts, and many of the area’s best attractions. Here are the perks of staying in Soufrière for your St. Lucia vacation: 

Luxury Resorts With Stunning Pitons Views

The south offers high-end luxury resorts that offer breathtaking views of the Pitons. Jade Mountain and Ladera Resort feature three-wall open-air designs that immerse you in nature and offer luxurious amenities, such as private pools. These are once-in-a-lifetime resort experiences, which makes them perfect for anyone planning a St. Lucia honeymoon or romantic getaway.

Close Proximity to Natural St. Lucia Attractions 

Some of St. Lucia’s most famous natural attractions are found in this area. The Pitons and surrounding lush rainforest are located in this area. From hiking Gros Piton to taking a sunset cruise for epic views of the sun setting over the Pitons, there are so many ways to experience this natural attraction. 

The Sulphur Springs are another St. Lucia attraction in the area, which gives travelers an opportunity to visit the Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano and take a dip in the mud baths. Toraille Waterfall and Diamond Falls are also located here.

The Island’s Best Snorkeling and Scuba Diving Spot 

South St. Lucia is the better option for anyone who has a love for snorkeling and diving. While the north offers plenty of opportunities for St. Lucia snorkeling, the south is more impressive underwater. The protected marine reserves in this area are home to coral reefs, tropical fish, and sea turtles. It’s also a popular spot for St. Lucia scuba diving. 

Insider tip: This region of St. Lucia is ideal for adventurers, honeymooners, and anyone who wants to avoid the crowds that are experienced in the Rodney Bay area. 

So, Where Should You Stay in St. Lucia? 

If you’re planning a St. Lucia honeymoon and want to stay at a once-in-a-lifetime luxury resort, I highly recommend spending at least part of your trip in south St. Lucia. But for most first-time travelers, I highly recommend staying in the north for most — if not all — of your St. Lucia vacation. 

My suggestion is to stay in the Rodney Bay area, where you’ll find the best beaches for swimming and water sports, shopping, nightlife, and deals on St. Lucia resorts. The area also offers easy access to grocery stores and plenty of nearby activities with easier access to tours, car rentals, and services.

You can still experience south St. Lucia by booking full-day excursions to Soufrière, the Pitons, Sulphur Springs, and other must-see attractions in the south. With only 90 minutes between south and north St. Lucia, you can experience everything from one location. Day trips to the opposite region are easy enough to arrange with a driver, rental car, or organized tour. 

When deciding where to stay in St. Lucia, another option is to stay in both the north and the south. This can give you a taste of both worlds. That being said, don’t feel pressured to stay in both the north and the south unless you genuinely want to experience two different St. Lucia resorts.
