1. North and South St. Lucia Offer Completely Different Vibes 

When planning a trip to St. Lucia, you’ll need to decide if you want to stay in the north by Rodney Bay or in the south near Soufrière. Each region provides a totally different experience and will set the tone for your entire trip.

North St. Lucia is the best region for travelers who want access to some of the island’s most popular beaches, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. It’s a great place if you want a vibrant atmosphere and lots of things to do nearby. There’s also a wide range of all-inclusive St. Lucia resorts. It’s perfect for families and travelers who want to experience the island’s best social scene.

South St. Lucia, on the other hand, is known for its natural beauty and attractions. It’s where you’ll find the iconic Pitons, lush rainforests, and waterfalls. The region is home to St. Lucia luxury resorts that offer some of the most breathtaking views on the island. It’s a popular choice for couples looking to book a romantic escape or a St. Lucia honeymoon.

2. Getting Around St. Lucia Means Windy Roads & Long Travel Times 

Most travelers who visit St. Lucia don’t realize how winding and mountainous the roads can be. It takes 90 minutes to get from Hewanorra International Airport (UVF), which is located in the south, to the north. To travel from the north to the south (and vice versa), it’s about 1.5 to 2 hours.

When planning a trip to St. Lucia, many people want to incorporate both Rodney Bay and Soufrière in their itinerary. If you choose to spend time in both the north and south, it’s important to plan ahead. Be sure to give yourself extra travel time, and consider splitting your time between the two regions so you don’t have to travel back and forth between the two regions too much.

St. Lucia travel tip: If you’re prone to car sickness, consider taking the water taxi from Soufrière to the Rodney Bay/Castries area. Another option is taking a helicopter transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) in the north.

3. The Best Time to Visit St. Lucia Depends On Your Goals 

If you’re planning a trip to St. Lucia, you might be wondering when the best time to visit the island is. The truth is that there’s no right or wrong time. It all depends on what type of St. Lucia vacation you’re interested in.

April through December is the most popular time to stay in St. Lucia due to the excellent weather conditions. It’s the dry season with sunnier days, lower humidity, and ideal beach conditions. Since this is a popular time to book a trip to St. Lucia, you can expect to see higher costs.

One of the best St. Lucia travel tips is to consider booking a stay between July and November, during the hurricane season. Since St. Lucia is lower on the hurricane belt, it’s very rare for the island to actually experience a hurricane. Instead, you’ll experience “liquid sunshine” — or very brief tropical showers. You can still enjoy plenty of sunshine in between showers, which also occur during the dry season. There are higher levels of humidity during hurricane season, but it’s a lot more affordable time to plan a St. Lucia vacation.

4. The Pitons Are More Than Just a View 

No trip to St. Lucia is complete without a visit to the Pitons — the most famous natural landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rising dramatically from the Caribbean Sea, Gros Piton and Petit Piton are a must-see for anyone planning a trip to St. Lucia.

The Pitons aren’t just a beautiful backdrop for photos of the island. They’re the centerpiece of some of the best things to do in St. Lucia. These St. Lucia travel tips can help you determine the best way(s) for you to experience them: 

• Hike Gros Piton hiking trails if you’re up for the challenge! (Hiking the Pitons is a strenuous, guided activity — not for the faint of heart!) 
• Take a sunset cruise for some of the most breathtaking views of the Pitons. (This is my #1 favorite St. Lucia excursion!) 
• Go snorkeling near the Pitons to explore some epic underwater scenery. 
• Hike the Tet Paul Nature Trail, which offers some of the most stunning views of the Pitons and the Caribbean. It’s considered one of the easiest St. Lucia hikes with some of the most rewarding views! (It does have stairs and uneven ground, so be sure to wear proper footwear). 
• Stay at one of the St. Lucia resorts that offer stunning Piton views. Book a stay at Jade Mountain here!

5. St. Lucia Offers a Variety of Beaches 

St. Lucia beaches offer so much variety. Thanks to the island’s volcanic origins, you won’t only find classic Caribbean white sand. You’ll find black sands, hidden coves, and dramatic coastal backdrops. One of my best St. Lucia travel tips is to be sure to see some of these unique beaches during your trip! 

Some beaches, like Anse Chastanet (located in the southwest), feature rare volcanic black sand, which was created by centuries of volcanic activity from the nearby Pitons. These beaches feel wild and dramatic, making them stand out from the typical Caribbean postcard scene.

Meanwhile, Reduit Beach in the north offers golden-to-white sands and calm, swimmable waters. It’s the perfect place for a family-friendly stay at one of the many nearby St. Lucia beach resorts, like Bay Gardens Beach Resort.

Most of the beaches in the south offer a more wild and rugged feel, while the north coast beaches tend to be more developed. The west coast, on the other hand, offers calm waters, which are perfect for snorkeling and boating.

For travelers planning a trip to St. Lucia, understanding the different types of beaches the island has to offer can help you decide where to stay! From lively beach bars and oceanfront restaurants in the north to dramatic landscapes in the south, the island has it all. 

Fun fact: All St. Lucia beaches are public by law, because they’re considered a part of the “Queen’s Chain.” This means you can legally visit any beach on the island, even if it’s in front of a St. Lucia luxury resort. 

You have legal access to swim or walk any beach on the island. While no St. Lucia resort can stop you from enjoying the beach and sea, they may restrict your ability to access through their property. You may need to find public access points, such as fishing villages or designated paths. Keep in mind that hotel chairs, umbrellas, towels, and beach bars are often reserved for hotel guests. 

6. The Rainforest Offers Opportunity for a St. Lucia Adventure

The island offers more than just beaches. In south St. Lucia, you’ll find lush rainforests. And while they provide a beautiful backdrop for photos, they offer something else, too: the potential for adventure.

There are a variety of ways to explore the rainforest during your trip. For example, you might: 

• Take a guided St. Lucia hiking tour through tropical jungle paths with Piton views. 
• Go mountain biking through the rainforest on old plantation and colonial estate trails. 
• Take adventure excursions at nearby volcanic areas and natural hot springs near Sulfur Springs.

St. Lucia travel tips: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing, and bring good hiking shoes because the rainforest can be muddy. It’s also ideal to book adventure excursions early, since they can fill up fast, especially during peak travel season.

I highly recommend seeing and experiencing the rainforest in different ways. The St. Lucia rainforest experience adds a unique layer to your trip that beach destinations simply can’t match! 

8. You Can Experience St. Lucia Nightlife at the “Friday Night Jump Up”

For adults planning a trip to St. Lucia, one of the best ways to experience the island’s nightlife is the Gros Islet Street Party. Also known as the “Friday Night Jump Up,” the party is held every Friday (except for Good Friday) in Gros Islet near Rodney Bay. This lively celebration is a cultural staple that’s attended by both locals and visitors, making it one of the top things to do in St. Lucia. Featuring music, food, drinks, and dancing, the party lights up the whole town.

Although it can be a great way to experience St. Lucia nightlife, it’s worth noting that the event is loud, crowded, and starts late, typically not revving up until 9 to 10 p.m. and continuing late into the night.

Here are some tips if you plan to attend the Friday Night Street Party during your St. Lucia vacation: 

• Arrive early for a more relaxed dinner before the crowds peak. 
• Bring cash for food, drinks, and taxis. 
• Stay aware of your belongings in crowded areas. 
• Book a private guide and driver in advance. 

St. Lucia travel tip: While the Eastern Caribbean Dollar ($XCD$) is St. Lucia’s official currency, US Dollars are widely accepted. That said, change is always given in whatever is on hand.

9. St. Lucia Is Famous For Its Jazz Festival 

The Saint Lucia Jazz Festival takes place in late April through early May each year. It’s a multi-day festival that takes place in various parts of the island, including Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island. The jazz festival draws international artists, with past artists including John Legend, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Sean Paul, and Ashanti. With a mix of jazz, reggae, R&B, and pop, it’s one of the top things to do in St. Lucia.

This is a really popular time to visit St. Lucia. Keep these St. Lucia travel tips in mind if you’re planning to stay during the jazz festival: 

• Make your reservations early, since hotels and resorts book fast. 
• Don’t be surprised to find higher prices for accommodations. 
• Expect a crowd.

10. You Can Visit a Drive-In Volcano

St. Lucia is home to the world’s only “drive-in volcano.” It’s one of the most unique things to do in St. Lucia. Located near Soufrière, the geothermal area allows you to get close to bubbling sulfur springs, steaming vents, and volcanic activity.

And the experience doesn’t end there. One of the highlights is soaking in the nearby mud baths, where visitors cover themselves in mineral-rich volcanic mud before taking a dip in the hot springs. The mud baths are considered nature’s spa! It’s one of the most popular St. Lucia excursions and a must-see attraction for anyone planning a trip to St. Lucia.
