New Orleans Steamboat Sunset Jazz Cruise: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re looking for one of the most unforgettable things to do in New Orleans, look no further than a New Orleans steamboat sunset jazz cruise.

If you know anything about me, then you already know how much I love sunset cruises! From the music to the cocktails and the sky transforming into pretty colors as you sail across the water, there’s just something so magical about them. The New Orleans jazz cruise was no exception! Watching the city light up as the sun dipped into the night sky while we cruised down the Mississippi River was one of my favorite views in NOLA!

This is one of the most memorable New Orleans excursions. As the sun sets over the Mississippi River, you can take in stunning views, listen to live jazz music, and experience the timeless charm of New Orleans from the water. In this guide, I’ll tell you everything to expect when you take a New Orleans steamboat sunset jazz cruise!

My Experience on the NOLA Sunset Steamboat Jazz Cruise

The New Orleans steamboat cruise felt like more than just another excursion — and that’s why it’s one of my favorite things to do in New Orleans. From the moment I set foot on the steamboat, I noticed right away that the relaxing atmosphere really invites you to slow down and unwind as you take in the views, listen to live jazz music, and learn more about the history of the Mississippi River (and the boat).

The sunset was gorgeous. As the sky turned a pretty shade of gold, a sense of calm took over. The New Orleans sunset jazz cruise was one of those experiences where I didn’t feel the need to be taking photos all night. I wanted to just live in the moment and experience the sun dipping into the sky. It’s one of those experiences that really encourages you to get lost in the moment — rather than getting lost in your phone.

As this New Orleans steamboat sunset jazz cruise took us along the river, I loved being able to take in the city from a different perspective. There’s something so magical about seeing the city skyline from the water, especially after the sun goes down. It was so incredible to see the bridge light up in different colors against the dark sky.

Although I did this sunset cruise with my best friend, I couldn’t help but think that this is one of the most romantic things to do in New Orleans, so I’d put it high on your list if you’re booking a romantic getaway!

The only negative thing I will say about the New Orleans jazz cruise is that it felt a little heavy on the history. I would have preferred to experience a little more jazz music. That being said, I would still do it all over again. The views were so worth it!

An added bonus of the New Orleans Mississippi River cruise? Since I visited the city at the end of June, the temperatures were HOT! Thanks to the breeze, this was one of the only times I felt like I was really able to cool off outdoors. This puts it even higher on my list of top things to do in New Orleans!

Things to Know Before Booking the New Orleans Sunset Jazz Cruise

If you’re planning to book a New Orleans steamboat sunset jazz cruise, here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind:

  • Dress comfortably. Be sure to check out the weather forecast on the night of your New Orleans jazz cruise. That being said, I highly recommend bringing a light sweater or jacket because even during the summer months, the ship can get breezy! I also suggest wearing comfortable (and safe) footwear for walking around the steamboat. While there are no attire requirements, smart-casual attire seemed most appropriate (e.g., a nice top and pants, or a dress).
  • Decide whether you want to eat onboard. While my friend and I opted not to eat on the ship, there is a New Orleans dinner cruise option. There’s also a bar, so you can enjoy alcoholic beverages whether you choose to dine onboard the boat or not.

  • Book your cruise ahead of time. If a jazz cruise is high on your New Orleans itinerary, I wouldn’t wait too long to book it. The tickets sell out fast, especially during weekends or busy times of year. Book your sunset jazz cruise here!
  • Arrive early. There was a very long line to board the New Orleans steamboat cruise. I suggest beating the crowds, which will give you more options when deciding where you want to sit.
  • Bring your camera or phone. Between the New Orleans skyline, the Mississippi River, the historic steamboat, and the sunset, there are so many opportunities for great photos! I loved capturing photos both during the sunset and when it grew darker, and the city began to glow!
