Things to Do in Akumal
Whether you’re planning a day trip from Playa del Carmen or Tulum or staying in Akumal, there are so many things to see and do. Here are some of the most popular things to do in Akumal:
1. Swim With the Akumal Sea Turtles
The main reason people visit the area is to swim with the famous Akumal sea turtles! If you love sea turtles as much as I do, this is an attraction you won’t want to miss out on during your Riviera Maya vacation.
Akumal Bay is a famous habitat for sea turtles, and you can swim or snorkel with them while they feed in the seagrass. From personal experience, I can tell you that there is a chance of seeing SO many sea turtles in Akumal Bay!
This is one of my favorite things to do in Riviera Maya. But keep in mind that there are rules and restrictions if you want to swim with the turtles. Read about my experience swimming with the sea turtles in Akumal and learn what to expect HERE, or reserve your spot today!

2. Snorkel at Yal-Ku Lagoon
This stunning protected coastal inlet in Akumal features clear, calm waters, making it the perfect place to go snorkeling in Akumal! One of the things that makes Yal-Ku so interesting is that it contains both saltwater from the Caribbean Sea and fresh water from the surrounding cenotes.
Yal-Ku Lagoon is a great place to encounter colorful fish and sea turtles! If snorkeling is at the top of your list of things to do in Akumal, be sure to add this attraction to your Riviera Maya itinerary! It’s also a great place to lounge on the beach.

3. Spend the Day at Akumal Beach
If you’re wondering, “Is Akumal worth visiting?”, many travelers would say yes, for this beach alone! It’s one of the area’s most popular attractions.
Known for its soft sand, turquoise Caribbean water, and relaxed atmosphere, Akumal Beach is one of the best places to relax on your Riviera Maya vacation. It’s a great place to go swimming, sunbathe, or read a book!

4. Relax at Half Moon Bay
This crescent-shaped bay is another place to relax in Akumal. Offering a quieter atmosphere than Akumal Beach, Half Moon Bay is just north of Akumal Beach.
If you want to visit a photoworthy beach in Akumal, Half Moon Bay is a great place to visit! Featuring beautiful palm trees, tropical scenery, white sand, and blue-green water, it’s one of the most Instagrammable spots in Akumal.

5. Explore Aktun Chen
Looking for things to do in Akumal for adventurers? Aktun Chen should be at the top of your Riviera Maya to-do list! This scenic rainforest park features underground caves and an underground river, which is perfect for swimming and exploring.
This Akumal attraction is perfect for anyone who’s looking to do something besides go to the beach or snorkel.
When Should You Visit Akumal?
Thanks to its warm, tropical climate, you can visit Akumal at any time of the year! That being said, the best time to visit Akumal is generally between December and April, when you’re more likely to experience warm temperatures and less rain.
Keep in mind that since this is a popular time to visit Riviera Maya, the cost of flights and accommodations will typically be higher. If you visit off-season, you’re more likely to find travel deals, which is helpful for anyone trying to plan a budget-friendly Riviera Maya vacation.
Christmas, New Year’s, and Spring Break are particularly busy, so be sure to book your accommodations well in advance.

Is Akumal Worth Visiting?
If you’re wondering, “Is Akumal worth visiting?”, the answer is yes due to the amazing attractions alone! Whether you spend the day swimming with the Akumal sea turtles, relaxing on the beach, or exploring underwater caves, there are so many unique things to do in Akumal!
Should You Stay in Akumal?
The biggest factor to consider when trying to answer, “Is Akumal worth visiting?,” is whether you should stay in Akumal or in Tulum or Playa del Carmen.
Staying in Akumal is ideal for travelers who want a relaxed beach vacation without an urban atmosphere and who don’t care if they experience much nightlife. If you love swimming, snorkeling, and want to experience marine-life encounters, an Akumal vacation is perfect for you.
If this doesn’t sound like the type of Riviera Maya vacation you have in mind, that’s okay! You can stay in Playa del Carmen or Tulum and still visit Akumal. No matter where you stay in Riviera Maya, I highly recommend adding swimming with the Akumal sea turtles to your itinerary!
