Akumal vs. Tulum: Which Has the Best Beaches?
If choosing the nicest Riviera Maya beaches factors into your decision, it’s important to decide what type of beach experience you’re looking for.
Akumal offers a quieter beach atmosphere where you can relax. The calm waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The protected bay is perfect for marine-life encounters. I highly recommend swimming with sea turtles in Akumal. It’s one of my favorite things to do in Riviera Maya!
When deciding between the beaches in Akumal or Tulum, the main difference is the number of things to do at Tulum beaches. Featuring long stretches of sand, you’ll find beach clubs and a lot more dining options at the beaches in Tulum. There’s also a beach-to-jungle atmosphere, which gives a more Caribbean feel to the beaches here.

Tulum is home to a variety of cenotes, with a large selection of open-air swimming holes to underground caves. The area is home to some of the most famous cenotes in the Riviera Maya, though one of the most popular cenotes — Dos Ojos — is closer to Akumal.
